About the artist
Carmen Mensink was born in the Netherlands and is an internationally renowned painter of thangkas, the traditional Tibetan scroll paintings of Buddhas and Mandalas. She is the founder of the School for Tibetan Buddhist Art, which offers classes both online and on location.
In addition to completing her studies at the Academy of Arts, Carmen studied for twelve years with Andy Weber (one of the first Western thangka painters) and has been teaching Tibetan Buddhist art, meditation and philosophy for over two decades, giving classes and lectures in museums, universities and Buddhist centers in Europe, Asia and the United States.
Carmen teaches at places like the World Museums in The Netherlands, the Vrije Academie, the Rubin Museum of Art, the Pratt Institute, Tibet House NY and Columbia University. Her work has appeared in dozens of publications.
Through the dedication and joy she expresses in her classes and passes on to her students, Carmen has guided and inspired thousands of people on the path of Buddhist art and philosophy.
Carmen lives in Amsterdam and is also asked to offer lectures and make large paintings -together with the visitors- at events and festivals, and has been asked for the last three visits of the Dalai Lama to the Netherlands to make large, five to nine meter long (floor) paintings of the Eight Auspicious Symbols; a traditional welcome when a high teacher comes to visit.
